Working with Recology to Handle Special Solid Waste Customer Requests After Cyber Incident

On November 2, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) was notified by its solid waste contractor, Recology, about a cyber security incident it experienced involving its routing and customer information system.

SPU is working closely with Seattle IT and Recology to understand the extent of the incident and whether any customer information was affected.

Once Recology discovered the incident, it immediately deployed back-up route and customer data systems, so service impacts to SPU customers have been minimal. Regular solid waste collections are operating as normal, but some special item pickups, missed collection pickups, new customer set-ups, or customer-requested service changes (frequency, container size, etc.) may be delayed.

Any current customer who has requested special item pickup, service changes, or missed collection pickup, or any new customer who has requested waste carts, should call 206-684-3000 if their request has not been fulfilled.
