Help Seattle Become a Waste-Free City!

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) invites people who live in Seattle to take our Waste Prevention Survey for a chance to win a $50 Visa gift card. The survey is one of many ways we are gathering input from the community to shape our new Waste Prevention Plan. Sharing your perspectives will help us better understand how we can support our community in preventing waste.

Survey opens: September 28, 2023

Survey closes: November 30, 2023

The survey will take about 15-20 minutes to complete and is available in English, Amharic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

At the end of the survey, you’ll have the option to enter the raffle. Each month, we will have 8 raffle drawings for $50 Visa gift cards. SPU employees may take the survey but are not eligible for raffle drawings.

What is Waste Prevention?

From bringing your own mug to the café and sharing tools with a neighbor, many Seattleites have embraced waste prevention. Simply put, waste prevention means stopping waste before it is created. You might already be participating in waste prevention, even if you do not use the phrase. Repairing, reusing, donating, and sharing are examples of waste prevention.

Some ways to prevent waste:

  • Reduce (use less)
  • Buy second-hand (buy items that have been owned by someone else)
  • Reuse (use something multiple times)
  • Repurpose (use something again, but for a different use than originally intended)
  • Share (rent, borrow, or lend items)
  • Repair (fix something instead of throwing it away)
  • Sell or give things away (give unneeded items a new home)

Why Prevent Waste?

Preventing waste can help save money, support local reuse and repair businesses, and build stronger communities. It’s also good for the environment and human health. Preventing waste reduces pollution, reduces greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change, and conserves our natural resources.

Let’s work together to shape Seattle’s waste prevention future. Take the Waste Prevention Survey today!
