Seattle Public Utilities and WM Now Accepting Applications for ReThink Waste Grants

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) and WM are inviting Seattle community organizations, small businesses, and nonprofits to apply for the 2026 ReThink Waste Grants. Now in its eighth year, this program supports creative, community-driven projects that reduce waste, increase recycling, and expand composting in Seattle neighborhoods.

From circular-economy pilots to reuse programs, repair workshops, and waste-prevention campaigns, the grants are designed to help local organizations bring new ideas to life. A total of $10,000 in funding is available this year, with individual grants ranging from $500 to $5,000.

The application process is simple, and the program is intentionally designed so that organizations of all sizes — and at all stages of project development — can participate. Whether you’re just starting an idea or expanding an existing effort, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful environmental impact in your community.

To support applicants, SPU and WM are offering virtual workshops from 12 – 1 p.m. Pacific Time on May 18 and June 1. These sessions will walk participants through the application, share examples of strong proposals, and provide space to workshop ideas or ask questions. Anyone interested in applying is encouraged to attend one or both sessions.

Applicants should be located within WM’s service area in Seattle and must propose a project that reduces waste, supports reuse, expands recycling or composting, or helps prevent materials from entering the landfill. Projects can be hands-on, educational, operational, or community‑focused — what matters most is clear environmental benefit and strong community engagement.

Organizations may now apply for the 2026 ReThink Waste Grants. Applications will be accepted through Tuesday, June 16.

Apply at WM’s online application form.
