Ghoulish Gourds Make Great Compost

Halloween is right around the corner, which means plenty of pumpkins will soon be haunting Seattle’s porches.

When carving your jack-o’-lanterns, remember that those gross gourd guts make great compost. Keep them out of the landfill and put them in with your food and yard waste, where they will turn into compost and help next year’s pumpkins grow!

After Halloween, you can put your pumpkins in your food and yard waste cart (along with all that candy corn), too.

Pumpkin Picture Prizes!

Send us a picture of your carved pumpkin! The top three scariest and original jack-o’-lanterns will receive a kitchen compost kit. Photos must be sent by Oct. 29 to curb.waste@seattle.gov.
