Upgrading the Records Vault: What to Know Before We Close December 15

We are making improvements to the Seattle Public Utilities Engineering Records Center, known to many of you as the Vault. To make them happen, the Vault will be temporarily closed from December 15, 2026 through August 1, 2027.

The Vault, on the 47th floor of the Seattle Municipal Tower, is where engineers, planners, and partner agencies turn for the records that keep our infrastructure running. These renovations are an investment in protecting and serving those records better for years to come.

What to expect during the closure

Vault staff will not have consistent access to all collections while work is underway. We will coordinate with renovation contractors to retrieve un-digitized engineering records as needed, but turnaround times may be considerable. When we can, we will send scans from available microfiche or microfilm to speed up your request.

Plan ahead. If you know you will need a record for a project in 2027, ask before December 15.
