Your Voice Shapes Seattle’s Waste-Free Future

Take the survey and make sure Seattle’s waste prevention plan reflects your priorities.

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) invites people who live or work in Seattle to take our Priority Waste Prevention Actions Survey for a chance to win a $50 Visa gift card.

Over the past three years, Seattle communities have shared your ideas with us about how our city can reduce waste and reuse more. We’ve used that feedback to create goals, focus areas, and key strategies for our Waste Prevention Strategic Plan and 2026-2030 Action Plan. Now, we want to check in to confirm that our plan is clear and if it reflects the priorities that the community has shared with us.

Survey opens: February 11, 2026

Survey closes: February 25, 2026

What is Waste Prevention?

Waste prevention means using less and reusing more so we stop waste before it starts. Many people in Seattle already do this, like bringing a reusable mug to a coffee shop, sharing tools with a neighbor, or fixing electronics instead of buying new ones. These everyday choices help cut pollution, save natural resources, and keep our community healthy.

You can prevent waste by:

  • Planning meals and storing food so it does not go to waste,
  • Choosing sturdy, reusable products instead of single use items like plastic bags or water bottles,
  • Repairing and reusing things to make them last longer,
  • Sharing or borrowing tools, books, and other items,
  • Salvaging building materials that can be used again.

Why Prevent Waste?

Throwing things away over and over pollutes our air, water, and soil, and harms people, wildlife, and the planet we all share. In neighborhoods that have faced more environmental challenges, waste prevention can make an even bigger difference.

When we buy only what we need, fix what we have, and share the rest, we save money, protect our health, and strengthen our local economy and community for today and for future generations.

Let’s work together to shape Seattle’s waste prevention future. Take the Priority Waste Prevention Actions Survey today!
