FAQ: Can dead batteries go in the garbage?

Answer: Yes (but wait, there’s more!)

batteriesDead alkaline batteries, including AAA, AA, C, D and 9v, can go in your curbside garbage bin. At the moment this is the only curbside disposal option for this type of battery.

However, you can also recycle alkaline batteries at several Household Hazardous Waste Facilities in the Seattle area.

Can’t find a location near you? King County operates a Wastemobile—a mobile drop-off site—that travels to numerous locations throughout the county and suburban cities. Visit the Wastemobile website for an updated schedule and a full list of accepted items.

Local businesses may also run a safe disposal program where they collect batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and other forms of hazardous waste. Remember to ask ahead of time if they have such a program.
