Cyber Monday Recycling Tips

Cyber MondayToday is Cyber Monday, which means many of us will be receiving packages over the course of the next few weeks. Here are some tips to reduce waste during this holiday season.

1. Packaging that comes with all those packages – like foam peanuts – can often be reused at local shipping outlets. Visit seattle.gov/util/lookitup for locations.

2. Cardboard can be recycled in Seattle. To keep it from filling up your recycling cart, flatten it first and place it next to your recycling on collection day.

3. There is no charge for recycling that doesn’t fit in your recycling cart. Place extra recyclables in study bins, boxes or 32-gallon cans next to your recycling cart.

4. Americans throw out millions of old phones and other electronics, or “e-waste” a year. E-waste can be recycled for free at several locations.  Visit seattle.gov/util/lookitup for locations.

5. Remember to bring a reusable bag with you when you go shopping.

6. Avoid receiving junk mail. Opt-out of catalogs and other junk mail at the City of Seattle’s free opt-out service: seattle.gov/StopJunkMail
