Shoppers will have a chance to pick up a free reusable bag on July 1 – the day Seattle’s plastic bag ban takes effect.
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is partnering with Safeway to provide free reusable bags to customers at every Seattle Safeway on July 1. SPU has donated 16,000 bags to the grocery company – 1,000 bags to each of their Seattle stores and they will give away to customers at least 1,000 of their own company-branded bags for free.
Also participating in the free bag matching program are Dong Hing Market in the Chinatown International District, Kress IGA Supermarket downtown (which will focus their giveaways on low-income customers) and the Crown Hill and Aurora Grocery Outlets. Each will give away 1,000 of their bags matching the 1,000 each receives from SPU.
SPU also donated 14,000 reusable bags to the Seattle Housing Authority for low-income tenants.
