FREE Pollution Spill Kits for Businesses

Resource Venture, a service of Seattle Public Utilities,  provides FREE pollution spill kits and plans to Seattle businesses to prevent oil, chemicals and other pollutants from spilling into the storm drainage system and going directly into our waterways without any treatment.

Cleaning up is not just the right thing to do; it’s the law. If there is a chance that pollutants could be carried by rainwater off your site, your business is required to:

  • Create and follow a spill prevention and cleanup plan
  • Keep a spill kit with response equipment anywhere spills may occur
  • Train your employees in how to prevent and respond to spills

All Seattle businesses that manufacture, store, use or transport liquids have the potential for a spill. Creating a spill kit and plan is the most cost-effective way to prevent and deal with a potential spill. Most cleanups cost between $5,000-$10,000.

To receive your free spill kit, go to spill plan application and complete and submit a form.

Once your spill plan is received, staff from the Environmental Coalition of South Seattle (ECOSS) working with Resource Venture will contact you to set up a site visit. During the visit, you will receive your spill kit, a laminated copy of your business’ spill plan, a laminated map of your facility showing the location of the spill kit and storm drains, and training on how to use and dispose of the spill kit contents. The Spill Kit Incentive Program is a partnership of the “Restore our Waters” initiative and Seattle Public Utilities and is being administered by Resource Venture and ECOSS.
