Seattle residents interested in building rain gardens in their yards can find out more at the next RainWise open house, on May 13 at 6:15 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 5801 Sand Point Way NE.
Co-sponsored by Sustainable Seattle and Seattle Public Utilities, the open house will include information about why hundreds of homeowners in Seattle have already decided to go RainWise. Residents will have the chance to talk to homeowners who have already built rain gardens in their yards and contractors that install rain gardens. Cistern installations are also part of RainWise.
The typical single-family home sheds about 50,000 gallons of stormwater runoff each year. Channeling that runoff to a rain garden or cistern can help to prevent sewage overflows and protect local waterways from polluted runoff.
RainWise provides rebates to customers based on how much of that runoff is diverted to a rain garden or cistern. The typical rebate covers most of the installation cost.
